United face Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final with kick-off at 4:30pm GMT
The first piece of domestic silverware is up for grabs this season as Manchester United face Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.
Erik ten Hag is looking to win his first piece of silverware at the club, while United are looking to win their first trophy in nearly six years. Newcastle have not won a major trophy since 1955 and will be hoping to signal a new era of success with a victory today.
United and Newcastle played out a goalless draw when they sides met at Old Trafford earlier in the season, and it could be another cagey game later today.
In terms of early team news, Marcus Rashford has travelled down to London for the match but remains a doubt. Anthony Martial has been ruled out and Newcastle 'keeper Nick Pope is suspended.

A difference in approach
The Newcastle squad have just arrived at Wembley and they are out on the pitch now getting used to the surroundings. There’s no doubt this is a huge day in the careers of so many of them. There’s no sign of United yet, they’ve not tended to come out onto the pitch before away games this season so they might not feel the need to head out onto the Wembley turf to acclimatise. A lot of them have played here before and they have that big game experience.

Newcastle advantage with match preparation
Within an hour of booking this Wembley berth Ten Hag was asked about the advantage Newcastle had in preparation. They’ve spent all week preparing for their biggest cup fixture in 24 years, but United had a massive game against Barcelona on Thursday night before they could turn their attention to the Carabao Cup final. A lot of those players will be asked to go again today, but as Ten Hag said after winning the semi-final: “Newcastle has an advantage, but it’s about attitude and mentality, when the players are fit we can do it.”
He also raised his experience at Ajax, when he followed a 1-0 win at Tottenham in the Champions League semi-finals in 2018/19 by winning the Dutch Cup that weekend. He’ll take a repeat of that scenario today.

Springboard to success
Some of the best Premier League managers in the past couple of decades have used the Carabao Cup as a springboard to success. Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola won it in their first seasons with Chelsea and Manchester City and Liverpool reached the final in Jurgen Klopp’s first season in charge. Erik ten Hag is already on track to be included in that company. The job he has done at Old Trafford is extraordinary, and today feels more like the first step on a successful journey than the destination in itself.
It’s February 26, after all, and United can still win all four competitions they entered this season. That’s a remarkable achievement, given where they were. They should reach the FA Cup quarter-finals this week and then the Europa League quarter-finals next month. It’s still a season that is so promising.

Jamie Carragher's pre-match prediction
Liverpool great Jamie Carragher is backing United to win today.
" I think Man United will win, just for the fact that they expect to win these types of games," he told Sky Sports. "They are used to being in this arena. I think they have got the edge in terms of the players on the pitch, but also what happens from the bench. I think Man United's record this season from bringing players on from the bench who determine the game will be a big factor. Erik ten Hag has got more options than Eddie Howe."
